The ApunKaChoice movie review of Haunted - 3D. Vikram Bhatt’s latest film Haunted - 3d is a full-on paisa vasool entertainer. How? If you are the faint of heart and get spooked by as much as the sound of your own steps, you will doubtlessly break cold sweat at the scares that Haunted presents in 3D visuals and stereoscopic sounds. If not, you will laugh yourself silly at the Ramsay-inspired antics the film adopts to give you the heebie-jeebies.
Creaky doors, falling chandeliers, rogue spirits wafting through the desolate mansion, shrieks of a tormented girl, blood-stained hands appearing out of nowhere, and more such gimmicks are aplenty in this strange story of a female spirit that’s been raped by the spirit of her dead music teacher.
Mahakshay Chakraborty (yes, Mimoh rechristened) plays Rehan, an MBA from Stanford. He comes to Himachal to take care of an old mansion called Glen Manor, where, as a lot of people in the vicinity claim, lives a ghost. As Rehan tiptoes through the uninhabited mansion, he sees signs and hears sounds of someone. Then he chances upon an old letter in a book. The letter reveals the backstory.
80 years ago, in the same mansion a music teacher (Arif Zakaria) made indecent advances towards his pretty student Meera (Tia Bajpai). When she resisted and he persisted, she killed him. Good riddance? Not really! Because the ghost or spirit of the dead teacher comes back and rapes the girl for many days before she eventually commits suicide.
Now, Rehan could easily skirt this bhoot-pret ka chakkar but sooner rather than later he’s involved. He falls in love with Meera. And he wants to wrest her free from the evil spirit of the teacher, even if it requires going back in the past to undo certain things.
Now, the end of the story can easily be guessed but it’s also a given that the evil spirit will raise the stakes against its annihilators. So we have the possessed women flying around like winged zombies, lots of ear-splitting screeches, and our broad-framed hero saved from death by the skin of his teeth. It’s all the masala a bhutiya film can cram in to regale you.
Mahakshay looks better than the Mimoh of the Jimmy disaster, but he still has a long way to go before proving that there’s more to him than dancing skills and a loaded surname. Tia Bajpai does leave an impression in a few scenes while Arif Zakaria is wasted.
As for 3D, don’t expect Avatar like effects, but there are indeed a few scenes where the visual depth created in three dimensions lends a great deal to the film. The sound work is also darn good.
All in all, Haunted 3D is a film that has its share of scares. But if you have binged on the Japanese brand of horror, Haunted has a snowball’s chance in hell to give you the chill.
